Having booked this trip quite spontaneously with my partner to celebrate a year of being together and stuff, I really didn't know quite what to expect.
But it was perfect.
Now, we all know the reason most people decide to take a short break to "the city of freedom". And yes, those sorts of activities were pursued, however, ultimately, that wasn't what our trip was about.
Amsterdam is a beautiful place. Seriously bloody beautiful. The architecture and basically all of the structures there are stunning. And on a bright, cold day, the canals shone like thousands of tiny stars had fell into the streets. We were absorbed in the interior design of most of the livings rooms that could be observed from the streets. The high ceilings, the mountains of books. Everywhere had its own unique charm.
Then of course, there was the gorgeous food that was sampled at every single meal we ate. I would highly recommend Humphreys Restaurant. I was treated to some of the best food I have ever eaten there by my boyfriend. The chocolate fondant is most likely the closest I've come to what can only be described as a foodgasm.
We visited the Nemo science museum, which was a very entertaining experience. Aside from the giant scary robot, known as "Elektra". Whilst there, we watched a demonstration of a chain reaction that was rather fun to observe. There were also dozens of personality tests taken. I certainly recommend the "iamsterdam" card we purchased, that happened to give us free admission into the museum. Most of our time, however, was taken up by just walking around and experiencing what the city had to offer us. Every street you went down had something interesting to look at or do, so that's just what we did.
Some of the things were more interesting than others. During one of our walks, we stumbled across a small alleyway and decided to follow it. Unbeknown to us, we'd found the Red Light District. It's quite the experience having half naked women suddenly appear at windows either side of you when you're not expecting it. Although, having experienced it only during the day, we decided to go back at night. That's when the real action starts. There's most definitely a lady for everyone, let's just say, they seem to cater to all tastes. And having eavesdropped a bit on some blokes conversation he had after emerging from one of these establishments, well. It would appear some things will cost you more...y'know, like, another 50 euros for a "facial".
Of course, we had to visit a coffee shop. And we definitely weren't short of choice. It's very hard to walk around Amsterdam and not find a coffee shop. Or, at the very least, smell one. The offer of their "special menus" is something you won't see often. And yes, that was a good experience, although we weren't actually in there very long...
Our hotel did happen to be a 4 star place. When we had booked it, we didn't really take notice of this fact. So, we were very pleasantly surprised by it. Despite the oddness of the frosted glass bathroom door...kinda left little to the imagination in a Sims-esque style blur whilst on the loo. Good job we're comfortable with one another.
Amsterdam is definitely somewhere I'd like to go to again, its beauty, its great transport system, the culture, the food, the nightlife and the freedom of the city all make it a destination I would recommend for anyone.
I had the most perfect time, but it did help that I was accompanied by the perfect person. Yes. Happy one year of love to us. May there be many more.
