Before The End of Things

How is it going dear folk? Are you well? I've been busy. And now it's 2020... and damn, what a year already.

Seeing as I probably won't be able to regale my thoughts in person (to the vast majority of you any time soon) have my thoughts on my recent travelling experience here:

I went and did the whole travel-in-a-van-on-the-other-side-of-the-world thing and it turns out it is pretty bloody good. Who'd have thought?

New Zealand is a beautiful paradise of a country and I was completely in awe of the place. Hardly a moment went by where I wasn't murmuring a soft "wow" or exclamation to myself.

Did I become that stereotypical traveller? I think maybe. There was a moment returning to Heathrow airport and catching a glance of ourselves in the mirror and there was an undeniable "we are those people now" type thing.

Travelling around in a van is an amazing thing. You'll stumble across places you would never have thought of visiting by pure chance. You will also encounter some of the more interesting toilet experiences of your lifetime. There will be cockroaches. There will be lots of sandflies. There will be flat batteries requiring the aid of the local school group to come and assist you. There will be bungy jumping (Thank you, Jello!). There will also be lots of perfect, beer-filled evenings watching glorious sunsets whilst sitting on camping chairs in a stunning location, thinking how you got so lucky to be able to experience such a thing. Then you will also eye up the plates of others who've left a few chips and because you are still hungry you will go ahead and eat them because you can't afford to buy chips.

Our adventures also spanned into Australia and Singapore. There was the Great Barrier Reef, the Sydney Opera House, the rainforest of Cairns, the Gardens by the Bay...

Anyway.

Back to quarantine life (please stay in and look after yourselves) x
